How Respect Helping Teams of workers Overcome Fear

Consider your relationship with your parents for a moment. We have always paid close attention to our parents' directions, both intentionally and unconsciously, unlike as we do with other individuals in our life. Did we act in their best interests out of fear or respect? Now consider the interaction you had with your teachers in school. Was it a respect or a fear?

You may often come to the realization that our terror was what forced us to pay close attention to our parents and teachers as children, finish duties, and alter how we behaved. But as we become older, the dread just fades away and is replaced by respect. When you're an adult, terror rarely, if ever, actually works.

On the contrary, if you have ever visited countries like Sweden where citizens have very high respect towards each other, systems, and processes, you’ll find it more attractive as a place to live and start to be more respectful yourself automatically as well (ACMC, 2023). While this is the case, there are many organisations that still think fear is needed to get things done. Fear-infused organisation cultures often follow carrots-and-sticks approach to maintain performance and productivity. However, this approach cannot engage employees in the long term and quickly tunes out the teams. These cultures often have hierarchical management that pays less attention to the voices of the employees. Employees often come to work expecting to perform the minimal required to earn the previously agreed upon remuneration. There is high conflict and often burnout among team members mostly due to the conflicts being left unaddressed. Creativity is also often absent in these organisations (Tom Flick Communications, 2023).
